Traditionally, machine learning approaches relied on user-defined heuristics to extract features encoding structural information about a graph (e.g., degree statistics or kernel functions). Learning compact features from high-dimensional data (such as image, document or video) via representation learning (RL) is a long-standing and challenging topic in the communities of data mining, pattern recognition, computer vision and neural networks (Bengio et al., 2013). We introduce a representation learning model based on word embeddings, convolutional neural networks, and autoencoders (i.e., ConvAE) to transform patient trajectories into low-dimensional latent vectors. Representation learning has become a field in itself in the machine learning community, with regular workshops at the leading conferences such as NIPS and ICML, and a new conference dedicated to it, ICLR1, sometimes under the header of Deep Learning or Feature Learning.
